General Notes on Submission
Performance Research is a peer reviewed, thematically based journal which welcomes responses to the ideas and issues it raises. Submissions and proposals do not have to relate to issue themes. We actively seek submissions in any area of contemporary performance research, practice and scholarship from artists, scholars, curators and critics. as well as substantial articles, essays, interviews, reviews and documentation. We welcome proposals that use visual, graphic and photographic forms, including photo essays and original artworks which extent possibilities for the printed page. We are also interested in proposals for collaborations between artists and critics.
Performance Research welcomes submissions in languages other than English and encourages work which challenges boundaries between disciplines and media.
The following notes are intended for potential contributors to the journal. Please read them carefully.
Each issue has a name, a number, a theme and a lead editor, or editors. The editors deal with all editorial issues and the submissions procedure is handled by our administrator, Linden Elmhirst. We also welcome articles on aspects of performance practice, scholarship and research. If you wish to submit an unsolicited article for general consideration by the editors, please take care to read our editorial statement which notes that our emphasis is on contemporary performance and the relationship between practice and research across the field of performance.
We welcome proposals using visual, graphic and photographic forms, including photo-essays and original artwork for the page, as well as articles, and performance, archive and book reviews. We also welcome proposals and submissions for artists' pages. If you wish to submit artist's pages you should bear in mind that you will have to submit final copy in camera ready form.
The Review Editors are Karoline Gritzner and Daniel Watt. Proposals for reviews and review articles should be sent to them at: performance-research@aber.ac.uk
Submission of an article to Performance Research will be taken to imply that it represents original, unpublished work not under consideration for publication elsewhere. All submissions are acknowledged.
The Submission Process
All proposals and submissions should be marked with the issue name and number for which they are intended, or whether they are for general consideration by the editors.
Unsolicited articles are distributed to editors and read at approximately quarterly intervals. We will contact you to let you know whether the article is rejected, or under consideration and whether we think it might be suitable for a particular issue. In general, articles are considered under the issue for which they are submitted and the following procedure applies.
All proposals and submissions should be marked with the issue name and number for which they are intended, or whether they are for general consideration by the editors.
The First Draft
Word Counts: Articles are generally between 3000 and 8000 words. Reviews are usually between 1000 and 2000 words, though Review Essays can be up to 4000 words.
References: Please also note that, due to constraints on the number of pages in each issue, we discourage lengthy academic references. You should try to keep any such references to 12 or less with an absolute maximum of 25 references.
Formatting: We accept articles on disk or by email attachment. Performance Research is a Mac based operation, but can usually accept articles in most formats. Please ask us if in doubt.
Artists Pages: Pages in any graphic form, made to page size 210 mm x 270 mm are acceptable. For initial consideration please send a mock up. Please include any special requirements or requests, for instance preferred placement in the journal, and whether the work should begin on a left or right hand page, or include page numbering etc. We will then give you the information required for you to submit camera ready copy.
Final Copy
Once your first draft article has been submitted and acknowledged it will be read by at least one editor and by one outside reader. Each of them will comment on the work and decide either to accept it as it stands, or accept it with revisions which you will be asked to make. Readers may also decide that it is not appropriate for the issue for which it has been submitted and therefore it will not go forward for publication, and you will be given feedback on the reasons for this decision. If readers accept your article or artwork, the issue editor will ask for a final copy and give you a submission date.
At this stage we ask that you send your work by email attachment and also send a hard copy by post to Sandra Laureri at our Aberystwyth office. This allows the copy editor to check copy against your original.
Please keep copies of your work at every stage and do not send original artwork.
Please include the enclosed cover letter with your final submission.
All permissions, and payments for them, are the responsibility of the writer or artist and should be finalized by the time you submit final copy.
You must provide ALL images you wish to use when you make your final submission. You must also have gained permissions for all illustrations and photographs before submission.
When submitting artwork, please list captions on a separate sheet, with all acknowledgements and copyright. All images should also be clearly marked with this information.
Please include an appropriately sized enveloped marked with your name and address, and please, please do not send us original material. The printing process is one during which things can get lost, please bear this in mind. Artwork will be returned after publication.
Photographs can be supplied as high-contrast black and white glossy prints or as digital files. Slides and colour photographs are acceptable but the reproduction quality will not be as high. All selected digital images should be originated and supplied as minimum 350 dpi TIFF files preferably on CD-ROM. Please use JPEG files for screen viewing ONLY. If you have a website, please upload your images to it in both JPEG and TIFF formats. Other illustrated material - diagrams or drawings- should be black and white camera ready copy.
Please consult us before sending email images and please do NOT send large files to editors over email.
Finalizing Artists' Pages
This is often an individualized process that depends on discussion between editor and artist. Responsibility for generating final, camera ready copy remains with the artist, but in many cases Performance Research engages our freelance designer, Kevin Mount, to work with artists to make sure all art work conforms to the publisher's and printer's requirements. As with articles, artists submitting work for artists' pages will also submit a cover letter.
The Publication Procedure
Following final submissions articles are submitted to the publisher for copy-editing, after which a first set of proofs is made - without illustrations.
After the initial proof stage, approximately one month after final copy is submitted to the publisher, the issue is laid out with illustrations and artists pages and page numbers are assigned. We may need to consult you at this stage.
The artwork and proofs are then sent to the typesetters and author proofs are generated via our publisher. These are the proofs you will receive (and comment on) about two - three months after your final submission.
At proof stage will be asked by our publisher to sign a copyright statement.
After author proofs have been returned to the publisher the issue is corrected and printed and you will receive off-prints.
Your artwork will be returned by our administrator Sandra Laureri following publication. |
